The Gear You Get in Mortal Kombat 11 Will Be Cosmetic Only

Confirming a suspicion we had ourselves going back to the Mortal Kombat 11 demo a few weeks ago, all of your gear in the game is just a cosmetic. The news came out on Xbox Wire where the crew interviewed NetherRealm Studios' producer Trevor Traub about the game, at which point he revealed that unlike Injustice 2, the gear you earn in the game will serve no purpose other than the way you look. Which is nice to know that you will not get any more special skills dressing up Sub-Zero to look like a snowman than you would making him out to be a blue ninja.

XW: There's a new gear system, which superficially looks like it is imported from Injustice 2. Are there differences for MK 11?

TT: Definitely. One of the major differences for Mortal Kombat 11 is that the gear itself has no stats. It's cosmetic-only. But there are other things that you can slot in, to modify either moves or gameplay or recovery windows. We're calling those augments. Those are all different. So, the gear itself is the cosmetic component, and then the augments are all different types of loot you can get throughout the game. You can deeply customize your character. Like Skarlet has a bunch of different arguments. You can make her get even more life from blood, totally different things like that. You can make different versions of your character. And those customizations will be seen online, but it's not quite like Injustice 2 – your stat changes will not all be in play online, but the cosmetic choices will be seen by other players.

The news does not change the fact that each character has their own fighting styles that make them play in different ways, so you can customize your character's look along with a specific style that will make them stand out. But everyone has access to those from the start. We can not wait to play with it more as Mortal Kombat 11 comes out on April 23rd.
