Automatic German Audi, Airbus and Italdesign introduced a gradual version of a future vision: a drone that can tighten the cabin off an autonomous electric vehicle and then fly to the intended destination.

The companies showed off the concept of flying taxis Tuesday during Drone Week in Amsterdam.

You can watch the whole video below that shows the different steps in the process.

To be clear, what the companies showed was an active prototype and one that is not big enough for people to enter. The prototype of "Pop.Up Next" was a 1: 4 scale model.

Still, the companies provided a bullish future of the future that they can say that it could only be a decade away.

"There are taxis on the way. We are convinced by Audi," said Dr Bernd Martens, a member of the Audi board for access and IT, and the president of the subsidiary Audi Italdesign in a statement. "There are more and more people moving to cities and more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation. In the future, senior citizens, children and people without a license will drive for the use of convenient robot taxis. If we succeed to make a clear allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit equally. "

Audi said in a description under YouTube video, that the airline taxi service could be used as "as soon as next decade."

In preparation, Audi is conducting tests in South America in collaboration with Vobus Airbus subsidiary to learn how an on-demand air service could look. Customers can order a helicopter flight in Mexico City or Sao Paulo, while Audi is ready for the trip to or off the landing site.

"Such services help us to better understand the needs of our customers, because in the future, flight taxis will appeal to a wide range of people living in the city. With Pop.Up Next we & # 39 ; n explore boundaries and what is potentially technically possible at the same time. The next step is a full-size prototype to fly and drive, "said Martens.

Audi also supports the Urban Air Mobility taxi project in Ingolstadt, an initiative aimed at preparing test operations for an air taxi in the Audi site.
