School spokesman Steve Kirschner said on Monday in a statement that the review "was due to issues raised by student athletes and others." He did not state what those issues were.
The girls' basketball training staff are all suspended while the review takes place, says UNC-Chapel Hill.
"The University of North Carolina is committed to the well-being of our student athletes and to ensuring that they have the best possible experience in the competition and outside it. Due to issues raised by students and other athletes, the University has started a review of our girls basketball program, "the university said in a statement.
Parker Poe Adams and Bernstein from Charlotte will carry out the review and assess the women's basketball program.
UNC officials did not provide a timetable for the inquiry, but said that the "review will be thorough and timely."
"I have had the privilege of training more than 200 young women during my 44 years in basketball. My aim was always to help them to be the best people they can be, on the basketball court and in life, t "Hatchell said in a statement. "I love every one of the players I've trained and I'd do anything to encourage them to support them. They're like a family for me. I love it all. Of course, I will cooperate fully in this review .I'm looking forward to bringing this issue to a timely conclusion and continuing with our program t very successful women's basketball. "
The girls basketball team went 18-15 this season and finished 8-8 in the WRA.
Hall of Fame coach Hatchell 2013 is the leading women's basketball coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference history. She has a career record of 1,023-405 and has 751-325 marks in 33 years at UNC with a national title in 1994.
Hatchell became the third female coach in Division I with 1,000 career victories in 2017, made her 23rd career appearance in the NCAA last month and is the only coach with national championships on three levels – AIAW, NAIA and NCAA .
The Tar Heels finished their season with a first round defeat to California in the NCAA women's tournament.
