Samsung has revealed its highly anticipated mobile phone and has encouraged Android developers to start writing apps for the new device.
South Korean technology company needs to be perfectly the foldable phone to reverse steep-down reductions for its mobile department and restore some of the lost cachet to Apple.
Portable phones promise a small tablet screen in a pocket device.
When unveiling in San Francisco, Justin Denison, senior vice president of mobile product marketing, showed a prototype with a 18.5cm (7.3in) measuring screen at a cross line.
After plugging in it seems to be like a thick phone, but Samsung did not give media or developers the opportunity to touch or view the device nearby.
Dave Burke, vice president of engineering for Android Android software platform, said at a conference in California that Samsung was planning to introduce a new Android based device earlier next year.
"We expect to see folding products from several Android manufacturers," he said.
Google's head UX, Glen Murphy, Google was also on stage with Samsung and said that Google would work with the developer's community to bring more features to the phone.
Samsung said he would be ready for mass production in the coming months.
Joshua Clark, who was at the conference, said Samsung needed to sell the technology to the competitors to adopt the product widely.
"I really believe it's just taking two companies, and then it'll suddenly catch up," Clark said. "Because Google is on stage, which says a lot. For developers to be able to integrate with all their apps, that gives me a lot of confidence."
Bob ODonnell, a analyst with Technalysis Research, said that although the fantastic screen provides a wow factor, shoppers may not like the thickness of the bending phone or the price tag.
"They will have to prove that it's more than just a gimmick," said Donnell. "But smart to open to developers early to do different types of experiences."
Samsung is among a wealthy developer that works on foldable phones. Huawei has said he plans to launch a smartphone 5G with a foldable screen in mid-2019.
However, Samsung and Huawei have been beaten into the market by Royole, a start-up Chinese demonstration, who revealed the latest phone of Android phone with a larger screen, and priced at around $ 1,300. Royole said he would start to fill out the orders at the end of December.
