Powder polio vaccine brings hope to Nigeria and Pakistan Society

A polio vaccine that can be stored as a dry powder at room temperature could offer a new way to help eliminate the disease, according to researchers.

Although the current vaccines have resulted in the removal of polio in many countries around the world, including the UK, the highly infectious virus still cyclicates in populations of countries including Nigeria and Pakistan, where it can cause paralysis or even death.

However, oral vaccines use a weak living virus that can, sometimes, transform into a virus version that can cause paralysis. As a result, there is a push to introduce another type of vaccine of the name of an inactive (IPV) poliovirus vaccine, which contains an injection that contains the virus's dead stresses.

Although this has already occurred in many countries, IPV's sensitivity to the temperature is above one large barrier to broad use and below about 4C (39.2F).

Now researchers say they have managed to develop a way of freezing-drying IPV, so it can be stored at a high temperature of up to 40C for four weeks and then canceled it to use – without losing its ability.

"We do not vaccinate dry non-operational polio vaccine and during drying free we added some ingredients that make it more stable," said Woo-Jin Shin, author of the report from the University of South California.

Writing in the Bio, Shin magazine and colleagues from the University of South California, and a company of the name Integrity Bio Inc, describe how the formula comprises of its magnesium sulphate ingredients, amino acid histidine and a # 39; r mannitol alcohol sugar

Then researchers store dry vaccine at different temperatures and look at how certain antigens levels have changed over time, as well as testing the vaccine on small groups of blades, with & The two types of experiments suggest that a little power of the vaccine is changed when it is stored four weeks, even at a high temperature.

Shin said he hoped that the method would be used to be used by charitable foundations.
