However, there appears to be a connection between breast cancer and sleep patterns, the statistical model used in this study does not necessarily suggest causality, says clinical research training member Dipender Gill at Imperial College, London at CNN. "For example, sleep genetic determinants can affect others … mechanisms that affect breast cancer risk are independent of sleep patterns," said Gill. So, although sleep patterns might be associated With the risk of breast cancer, they do not necessarily cause it, according to Gill – other genetic and health factors may play.
"Sleep is likely to be an important risk factor for breast cancer," said Richmond at CNN. But other health factors, such as drinking too much alcohol, are more of a concern, he says. He further said night owls should not be too worried about the findings of the study, as there are many factors, some of which are genetic, which contribute to the risk of breast cancer.
In terms of getting enough sleep, and reducing the risk of illness like breast cancer, go to bed earlier when you can help.
