Red ribbon in the area: Aids-Hilfe Styria travels to the area

Aidshilfe Steiermark travels under the motto "I want to know!" through the Weiz area.

There were 58 people in Styria in 2017 who were diagnosed with HIV infection for the first time. This represents a 26 per cent increase compared to 2016. In order to highlight this undesirable development and increase its awareness of HIV and AIDS, Aidshilfe Styria travels to the Weiz area.

High therapy costs

40 percent of the diagnosis is done very late. This means that those affected have been carrying the virus for many years, weighing their own health and potentially endangering others carelessly. Due to the further development of medical treatment options, people who have been infected today can lead to almost normal life, but there is still a major problem with HIV-infected or AIDS diseases in our society, explains Manfred Rupp, head of Steilmark Helpshilfe. In addition, the average cost of care of a person infected HIV over the whole life would be between 400,000 and 500,000 euros.

Weiz Class Tour

Up to World AIDS Day, which takes place on December 1, Aidshilfe Styria in the Weiz area wants to make the trip "I want to know!" create awareness and inform people through lectures, free and anonymous tests, and poster posters and red ribbons on public buildings.
During the lecture "Aids, is this something else for us?" will be discussed on November 15 at the Paracelsusapotheke Weiz and on November 27 at the Gleisdorf Kulturkeller on the subject. Health Councilor Christopher Drexler stresses that the disease should not be forgotten: "Because of the treatment options, an HIV infection is now being treated, but we should not reduce this disease."

Unknown tests

At Graz, you can be tested anonymously and free at Aidshilfe Steiermark. The result of the test is accepted within three to five days. A quick test allows a result after half an hour. There are currently 80 per cent of people experiencing Graz and the surrounding area, with a tour of the regions they want to make it easier for people to access HIV testing . "I hope that the area trip will raise awareness of this important topic and reduce the fact that people are affected by the infection," said Rupp.
