On Thursday, November 15, 2018, five years have just passed since the start of the first commercial 4G network in Slovakia. Over the whole period, it was possible to significantly improve all the parameters of the network, to find where there was not yet a fast mobile Internet up to several miles in Slovakia.
2013: The 4G network is unexpectedly starting in five cities
Slovakia Telekom has initially launched a 4G network in five Slovakia towns (Nitra, Trnava, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov). Originally it was 73/23 Mbps and, in particular, sending data was already a significant step forward in this version. Sending photos, sharing videos and files has been 10 to 20 times faster. By the end of the year, the coverage increased to 31 places and 23.7% of the population.
Network 2014: 4G for more than half of the population and new speeds
After a 4G successful network bandwidth, Telekom arrives in Bratislava in April 2014 with the 4G network in Bratislava, where it presents the highest speeds: 150 Mbps to download and 50 Mbps. These can be achieved, thanks to an improved band, but at the same time, more and more heavy attention is needed in the housing estates. Every week later, Košice and Trencin also followed.
By the end of 2014, more than half of Slovakia was completed: already 52 percent. Apart from 84 towns and many villages, tourist areas like Štrbské Pleso also grew.
2015: 4G + brings a new speeds ceiling of 225 and 300 Mbps
In 2015, the comment increased, crossing the border 75 percent. The 4G network was available for 134 cities and hundreds of other villages by the end of the year, including new ski resorts such as Chopok, Jasna, Donovaly, Malino Brdo and Velka Rača.
This year Telekom developed new technological innovations. In June, the LTE-CA (4G +) expanded to 225 Mbps in Nitra and survived in November LTE-CA at 300 Mbps in Bratislava.
At the same time, Telekom received both P3 Best Testing certificates thanks to the highest score in the Slovak network operators' test.
2016: 375 Mbps in the 4G network and all the cities covered
Telecom has survived new milestones – covering 140 seats at the end of March 2016, with a total increase rising to 87.2% by the end of the year. The 4G + network is also present in other cities such as Košice, Trenčín, Senec and Marianka.
Speed racing did not occur – in December, the 4G + network was launched with speed up 375 Mbps in many parts of Bratislava.
It is assumed that there are two other Best Testing Certificates in the quality, where Telekom has successfully eliminated the scores of other operators with the report.
2017: 4G network calls and strong test results
Also in 2017, the 4G network expanded in two directions – 89% of the population has already reached the base, and 4G + have arrived, for example, Pezinka, Poprad, Zvolen, Piešťany or Nový Zámkov.
The start of the service is a great innovation VoLTE (Voice over LTE). Thanks to this, customers do not need to switch from 4G to 3G / 2G networks to make a call, have a higher quality, and make a fast connection.
In the autumn, Telekom has won the best F3s Best in Test with the highest score.
2018: 4G accelerates again – up to 877 Mbps
In 2018, Telekom used its technological technology for testing news that brought customers higher speeds. Thanks to what is called "The 64QAM modulation has increased capacity up to 50% when sending data, the maximum maximum upload is 75 Mbps.
The 256QAM modulation has once again accelerated the ability to download data, the download has risen by about a third, and the current maximum has moved from 375 to 500 Mbps.
Finally, Telekom has joined a combination of multiple bands and spectrum, has added 4×4 MIMO solutions and has already reached a new highlight in Bratislava: 877 Mbps.
Tests and real answers
Telekom carried out several tests in the 4G network in the years 2014-2016, which were then used in real commercial use. About one to two years runs between the real world traffic and pilot, as new speeds of 300, 375 and 877 Mbps are introduced gradually.
How does the 4 year operation arise?
The 4G network has a significant impact on general data traffic. 3G network customers have started dating, but the network up to 4G experience significant growth and significant contribution. For comparison, in the year 2014, customers gave over 7 PB data, while in 2018 Telekom expects up to three times the volume.
The 4G network share is gradually increasing in total traffic. At the end of 2014, it was close to 10%, one year later reached 30%, at the end of 2016 it was above 60% and it's beyond 80% of total data traffic.
VoLTE as a modern technology
Start VoLTE, e.g. 4G network calls are expected for a long time and represent a step forward in customer experience. In the 4G network, it is possible to connect the call in 1 to 2 seconds to ensure a higher overall connection quality. There are currently more than 50 models supported by VoLTE in the Telekom portfolio, including the full range of Apple devices. Their number will continue to increase, which will help technology become a new standard.
