Rafael Benitez discussed the targets that Newcastle United needs to reach if they want to avoid being reversed after their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Newcastle suffered their first defeat in three games Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette scored in the Emirates Stadium.
Benitez said Sky Sports: “I think this kind of game is very similar. We were close, but it was about opportunities in the third last.
“Once you have to defend against a team with speed and quality. You have to do things right while protecting. After we surrendered the second goal it became even more difficult for us.
“We tried to attack but they are a good team at home – they play and weigh.
“We were pushing for 1-0. They need to score the second goal. Both goals were scratch goals.
“The third last we have been talking about through the season, the third last you have to spend £ 40m £ 50m, £ 75m.
“We have to try and get three points against Palace. The next game is the most important.
“Obviously last week the teams at the bottom, with the exception of Cardiff, won.”
With 35 points, Benitez side at seven points above the leak zone, and the tactician believes that they only have a couple of gains from security.
“We played against a good team and we were right for a bit in the first half. We could avoid their goal, it was a little lucky, ”he continued.
“We had situations on the counter-attack where we could be more dangerous but we didn't do it. During the last 10 minutes they scored but until the second goal we were pushing. It's a shame because you might feel that the atmosphere is nervous.
“When you play the upper side it can be a mistake that makes the difference. Eventually it was a mistake and we must learn from this and be prepared for the next one.
“I think 38 points are enough, just in case. Hopefully it will be less. ”
