A group of American scientists have identified an anti-flu drug that can block Covid-19 transmission in 24 hours, according to a study published in the journal Nature Microbiology.
BUCHAREST, Dec 4 – Sputnik. A new influenza drug MK-4482 / EIDD-2801, called Molnupiravir, blocks SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus transmission, according to a study by a team of researchers at Georgia State University and led by Richard Plemper.
According to results published in the journal Nature Microbiology, Molnupiravir provides good results in the early stages of Covid-19 and has been shown to be effective against other RNA viruses.
Study conducted on ferrets
The scientists conducted the study on ferrets infected with SARS-CoV-2, which was orally administered the drug twice a day.
“We analyzed the efficacy of therapeutically administered MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 in ameliorating SARS-CoV-2 infection and preventing fermented transmission, as ferrets transmit the virus easily but show minimal clinical signs that similar to the spread of the virus in the young human population. adults, ”said researchers in their study, quoted by Sputnik France.
Tests have shown that MK-4482 / EIDD-2801 prevented Covid-19 from progressing to severe form and could prevent transmission of the virus within 24 hours.
Molnupiravir is currently in phase 2/3 of clinical trials, the researchers say. If its efficacy is confirmed, patients with Covid-19 will stop transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to others within 24 hours of starting treatment, the scientists hope.
