Designated Portuguese architect project nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize – Culture



The agency Lusa, the architect, who works for the Spanish studio in Madrid, has contacted that she received the notification from the Mies van der Rohe Foundation "as a recognition of the quality of a project."

"It's a bit, a first step that makes us very proud," he said on the nomination, for this competition and initially selected dozens of projects and, later, chooses the final.

In August of this year, a competition conducted by the Architects Order chose five Portuguese projects to be included in the list of nominators for the Mies van der Rohe 2019 Prize.

The selected work is: Faculty of Architecture, Tournai, Belgium (Aires Mateus), Rio do Rio Rural House (Francisco Vieira de Campos), Terfynfa Cruise Lisbon (João Luís Carrilho da Graça), Jardim Botânico Porto: Resettlement Casa Andresen a Casa Salabert and Tŷ Gwyrdd Franz Koepp (Nuno Valentim, Frederico Eça and Margarida Carvalho), and Pledge – Casa do Caseiro (Camilo Rebelo, Cristina Chicau and Patrício Guedes).

When the Arvo Pärt Center project was created, created by the team led by the Alexandra Sobral Portiwalian, between 2016 and 2018 in Laulasmaa, Estonia, and will be the seat of that entity that hosts the personal archive of the composer Arvo Pärt, with an auditorium, library and exhibition space.

He was created to welcome musicians, researchers and anyone with an interest in the work of the Estonian Arvo Pärt scholar, born in 1935, who created a specific musical language of the "tintinnabuli" in 1976.

"It's a very special project because it's been created to celebrate and spread the work of a lively, uncommon composer," said Alexandra Sobral, who has been working for 14 years in the atelier.

Regarding the competition held in Portugal by the Architects Order, who was invited to submit five applications, he also recommended, in the category "New Architect", the splendid work of the temporary garden pavilion, Diogo Aguiar.

The jury sold by Daniel Fortuna do Couto, Alberto Souza Oliveira, Carlos Antunes, Paulo Tormenta Pinto and Theresa Novais 31 candidates.

He joined the five times with a number of professional organizations, experts and organizations from the European countries, and will be evaluated by a jury, with the intention of establishing a list of terminals, and the institution will have to visit until the Mies van der Rohe Prize.

According to the Portuguese Architects Order, the jury chose those who, in their opinion, "represented the architectural production in Portugal better in the 2017-2018 business, taking into account different typologies and territorial framework, which are assessed the criteria defined for the award ".

The Mies van der Rohe Award has distinguished a number of architects in the European place and in its first issue in 1988, Álvaro Siza was awarded the delegation project of the old Banco Borges & Irmão in Vila do Conde.

The Mies van der Rohe Award for Contemporary Architecture of the European Union, worth € 60,000, was established in 1987 by the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation in Barcelona and is considered one of the most notable awards in the area of ​​architecture.
