There are still a few weeks left before we will be able to catch Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters (or, if you’re in the US, on HBO Max), but the first reactions to the film are out. And so far, it looks like he has recreated the magic of the original 2017 movie.

The film brings back Gal Gadot as the titular superhero as well as director Patty Jenkins. Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor too, though we still don’t know why.

Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig play the bad guys of the film – Max Lord and Cheetah, respectively.

The original was notable for its hopeful and light-hearted tone, its adequate humor and its more vibrant palette, rather than the dark, dark mood of the rest of the DC film universe at the time. The sequence seems to carry those themes and nuances.

Erik Davis from Bandango tweeted, “I’m so happy to report that # WW84 was a complete blast from start to finish. Extraordinary praise for the first film, it’s stuffed w / heart, hope, love, acting, romance and humor. @PattyJenks, @GalGadot & team presented one of DC’s best sequences. I was in tears when it stopped. ”

Brandon Davis of Comicbook.com wrote, “I’ve seen # WonderWoman1984! @PattyJenks literally made a movie of the 80s in every way, making it so unique for today. It feels like both are bigger than the first WW while being more limited at the same time. Lots of Diana Prince and some epic Wonder Woman moments as @GalGadot literally ascends! ”

Dorian Parks from Geeks of Color said, “I got to watch # WonderWoman1984 early! I loved the first film and can confidently say that the sequel takes everything to another level! Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig completely kill him as Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. Let Patty Jenkins take charge of the entire DCEU! ”

Terri Schwartz of IGN wrote, “I was lucky enough to be one of the first (at last!) To screen Wonder Woman 1984. I adored it. The first Wonder Woman is my favorite of the modern DC movies, and # WW84 makes all the smart next steps, telling a very human and beautiful story to Diana Prince. ”
