New Zealand crisis callers for faster help: minister – Brinkwire


WELLINGTON, 21 November (Xinhua) – Emergency calls made of all mobile phones in New Zealand will soon have checked their locations, enabling a faster response in an emergency, the government official said on Wednesday.

Broadcasting Minister, Communications and Digital Media Kris Faafoi said improvements to the Emergency Placement Information (ECLI) service will improve this life-saving technology.

"The ability to check caller locations quickly means that emergency services can be sent faster and reach those who need help faster, which can make a huge difference to the result of an emergency situation," said Faafoi.

The ECLI service was introduced to New Zealand in May 2017, offering accurate information for smart phones that run the Google Android system, which accounts for about 70 percent of the New Zealand market, and]e accurate location information for most other mobile devices.

He received the very detailed location solution to mobile phones that runs Apple's iPhone iOS operating system in April 2018, he said.

"We will extend the ECLI service to all other mobile calls to 111, and increase the number of calls supported by a very detailed location," said Faafoi, adding that calls made from basic phones that are not capable use the internet and international visitors using their quarries phone on the New Zealand network.

These changes are now under way, and by mid 2020, the location within 50 meters will be checked to 95 per cent of all calls of smartphones. A lower detailed location is also being improved and will be available for the remaining five percentages of mobile phones and other mobile phones, in most cases between 50 meters and 2,000 meters, according to the minister.

In its first year, ECLI was used to help check locations almost 400,000 emergency calls. When these improvements are complete, that number is expected to jump to 780,000, he added.
