A converter has exploded, injuring one person, in Manukau, de Auckland.

A person has suffered severe electrical burns following a transformer in business in southern Auckland.

Daniel Nicholson, New Zealand Fire and Emergency shift manager (FENZ), said he had responded to Frucor in Manukau following reports of an explosion involving a converter, or a power box, at 12.56pm on Tuesday.

However, a spokesman for Frucor said that the incident had not happened on his premises and that his employees were not involved.

Nicholson understood that one person had had electrical burns.

A small fire was put out using a dry powder extinguisher.

A St John spokesman confirmed that two ambulances had been sent to the incident where a patient was treated and taken to the Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

The police also attended, but a spokesman said the matter was in the hands of FENZ and St John.

A vector spokesman said the fault had occurred during the planned work on the Orb Ave network and had affected some nearby customers for about an hour.

WorkSafe said that he had not been informed of the incident.
