Ideally, a fast track or cycleway route is a wide cycle route (4 meters or wider) with a few obstacles, light curves and a few crossings. If there are intersections, the rider on the fast track has an official priority, but that's not well organized everywhere, says the ANWB. Some routes are often too narrow and there are too many jobs on or along the route.
There are also crossings where motorists are not being warned properly about cyclists.
The government wants to promote the use of bikes, also for longer distances. There is already an extensive network of cycle routes. An additional 850 km will be added in future years.
