Negev Town to assist families of children with medical, therapeutic needs

The Israeli government issued its stamp of approval in September on the establishment of a new inclusive town within the Merhavim Regional Council in the wilderness of West Negev Israel.

The construction of the new community, named "Daniel," is being built in conjunction with Merhavim; the Ministry of Construction and Israeli Housing; and ALEH, the Israeli care network for children with severe complex disabilities. The completion date has to be targeted within the next two years.

ALEH is currently running four residential facilities that provide more than 750 most vulnerable children in Israel with high-quality medical care and rehabilitation.

The name "Daniel" was chosen in memory of the 4-year-old Daniel Tragerman, killed in a mortar assault launched by terrorists in communities near the Gaza border in 2014, only two days before the end of Israeli Defense Forces; "Protective Protection Campaign" against Hamas. Daniel's mother, Gila, is a spokeswoman for Merhavim Regional Council.

After installation for A few miles west of Ofakim and next to ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran-the rehabilitation village in the de-network-Daniel will integrate residents with severe complex disabilities as part of & # 39 ; r community fabric and the provision of housing for medical professionals who will find work at ALEH's new Neuro-Orthopedic Rehabilitation Hospital, located to the ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran campus in early 2019 .

Former member Knesset, Avi Wortzman, who serves as the general director of ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran, explained the concept of the new town to JNS.

"The idea was to build a new community near ALEH Negev so that families with children with special needs can get close treatment. At the same time, this will be an ideal housing option for the medical personnel and Therapists who work at ALEH, "he said.

Wortzman believes that an estimated 1,000 workers will have found work in Aleh Negev within five years, including in the rehabilitation village and in the new hospital. It anticipates 1,000 other volunteers that serve within the organization and various projects.

Israel is already in the midst of a serious housing crisis, and ALEH sees this new community, which will contain 500 units when it has finished, as a solution to alleviating that burden.

But most importantly, Wortzman states that the new town will offer "high quality living facilities that can be accessible to people with disabilities."

He added that the community will be a model of integration that the rest of the country can turn to it as an example. "I can see this as a utopia where children with disabilities and others can live with each other and interact with each other," he said.

According to Wortzman, "over the last few years, Israelis has succeeded in getting a lot better in the involvement of people with disabilities – whether they receive them in their communities or make facilities for a wheelchair – [and handicapped-] accessible – but we still have a long way to go. "

A current project is proud of ALEH running for 13,000 NUI students in Israel in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of the name "World Repair, Together ", where the children are studying from a curriculum that will teach them how to accept other people's disabilities. Contrary to the time volunteering is within ALEH facilities.

"The Future of Building Negev"

The Head of Merhavim Shay Hajaje Regional Council is considering building "Daniel" in the Negev as a distinctive Sioniaeth effort.

"Building this town is amazing, this is a core principle of Zionism," he told JNS, adding that "this unique unique town can help so many people."

He added that the name of the "Daniel" town after his son's son gave the project so much more meaning: "This is a great privilege to be part of it".

Wortzman, who lives in the city of Beersheva, known as the "capital of the Negev," indicates that he had turned the opportunity to serve for a second season in the Knesset to stay in the eye of the ALEH southern branch. "Being MK is important, but going to work everyday and know that I can improve people's lives, this is extremely satisfactory. Now with the construction of the hospital and the new construction of & # 39; Daniel, yes [even more of] Honor to be part of the future of building Negev. "

According to the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Daniel is already in demand, as it will draw a wide range of people, including ALEH related families and health providers, as well as young couples of the region ; Search for a new community, and IDF career soldiers serving in the area.

"Setting up new towns in the south will bring more people from Israel's center, strengthening its economy and increasing the security of the whole area," said Minister of Construction and Housing Yoav Gallant in a statement.

"And through partnership with ALEH, we will not only create jobs and affect the bottom line," he said, "but emphasize social attitudes like caring for those with disabilities and special needs."
