Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday paid tributes to former prime minister and her grandmother the late Indira Gandhi and said that while the United States had for the first time elected woman Kamala Harris as Vice President, India had selected Indira Gandhi to be Prime Minister 50 years ago.
Taking to Twitter, Ms Gandhi wrote in Hindi: “Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President of the United States. On Indira Gandhi’s birthday, it should be realized that India chose a female Prime Minister 50 years ago. Indira’s courage and strength Gandhi will always be an inspiration to women all over the world. “
Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, to India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, and Indira Gandhi served as the country’s first and only female prime minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her murder in October 1984.
