It is not just Amazon to analyze the possible installation of a data center for Latin America in Chile. The country also attracts the attention of both iconic technology companies from China: Huawei and Alibaba.
In the case of Huawei, company sources in Chile PULSO ensured that the local office was in the middle of the campaign to convince the main office in China to implement a major investment in the country, which would be expressed in a data center for America. Latin, focuses mainly on cloud computer services.
However, according to the source, which refused to disclose the amount of the investment, there are also two other candidates: Brazil and Argentina. The final decision should be ready during the second quarter of 2019.
The company has been meeting several times with InvestChile, an entity that is also interested in the project that is being developed in the country. Director of this entity, Cristián Rodríguez, said: "Huawei has an important presence already in Chile, as it is a market that is very attractive to them, and as InvestChile, we maintain permanent communication with them for project development in the future".
But Huawei is not the only company trying to settle in Chile. Rodriguez himself met last year in China with the vice president of the Alibaba group, Liu Song, an example where both discussed the benefits of the country for the installation of data centers, which is being evaluated by the Asian company.
Rodriguez has also held meetings with other Asian Asian representatives, although it was not possible to know the names of these companies.
Alibaba, who is also well-known for being one of the largest players in the world in the e-commerce sector, has also split a cloud, which has 19 data centers in the world, but none of them Latin America.
Currently, InvestChile has 10 data infrastructure projects and data centers, in different stages of development, for a sum of US $ 2 billion potential. Among the companies that join their reach in the country are Ascenty and other companies from Brazil, the United States and Luxembourg.
In addition, Microsoft may have another interest. In this regard, Francisca Arenas, Microsoft Chile's Marketing and Operations Manager, said that although there is no specific project, this company always evaluates investments continuously at a local level, considering that Chile has "one of the # 39 ; the most favorable environments in the region ". for new investments, as well as advanced data areas such as astro-engineering ".
Chile and Argentina are still countries for building a data center for the region, where the investment would be around US $ 1,000 million.
The company has held meetings with the two governments and a few weeks ago, Abby Daniell, Public Sector Business Development Manager for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Latam said, "we are still making the process due diligence, where Chile is still one of the candidate's countries in the process ".
