Weekend conference for New Brunswick cancer survivors at risk after breach of grant – New Brunswick

For the last 20 years, a group of New Brunswick cancer survivors have convened for a welfare support weekend at the Villa Madonna Face House at Rothesay, N.B., but may soon change.

The New Brunswick Breast Cancer Network says that its holiday has guest speakers, nutritionists and personal trainers.

Many attendees believe the events with changing their lives.

"We have a lot of information that we do not get in our doctor's offices or with oncologists," said Raelene Arsenault, a cancer survivor who attended this year's conference.

This is a theme this year's event, and the attendees said that the overall objective was to create an atmosphere of reception.

But organizers say they lost 85 per cent of their money when Canada's Breast Cancer Association had joined forces with the Cancer Society.

Now, the hunt is about to find a sponsor to fund the weekend.

"I'm really determined that I'm going to find businesses here in Fredericton and large groups of people who would support us so we can keep this," said Cathy DeLong, assistant conference.

Delong has been free of breast cancer for 13 years and has been attending survival support weekends over the last 10 years.

The weekend draws around 60 people present and can cost between $ 10,000 and $ 15,000.

But for women like Mary Jane Smith, another conference assistant, the accompanying support together with the events is invaluable.

She really remembers a woman she was related to who had breast cancer that had been fetastrated to the bones – the same type of cancer he has.

"She was a survivor of seven years, so he gave me a lot of hope that I would not die immediately," said Smith.
