Surface Transplant Patients Reveal New Mirror 10 Months After Surgery

Cameron Underwood, a 26-year-old man who had a face transplant this year, showed his new smile to the world on Thursday.

In June 2016, Underwood suffered a wound on his own, which had severely damaged most of his smile, nose, pale and tooth, according to a statement to the NYone Health press Langone. Despite many attempts on conventional regeneration surgery, Underwood was still missing in key areas of face.

Beverly Bailey-Potter, Underwood's mother, reads Dr Eduardo D. Rodriguez, chairman of the Hansjörg Wyss Plastic Surgery Department at NYU Langone, and decided to contact him for help. Then, Underwood and Bailey-Potter left their hometown of Yuba City, Calif., To travel to New York City to meet Dr. Rodriguez and a team that would give a face transplant that changes life to Underwood.

"When we read about what Dr Rodriguez had to do for his other patients, we knew he was the only person we would trust in Cameron's life," said Bailey-Potter in the statement to & # 39; r press. "We were ready to travel the long distance."

On January 5, a team of more than 100 medical professionals led by Rodriguez performed Underwood's surface transplant surgery, which took about 25 hours to complete. The underwood surface transplant was the third surface transplant completed by Rodriguez and his team, who, according to NYU Langone Health, had completed the larger surface transplant on record in 2015.

Since 2005, more than 40 face faces were performed globally and Underwood's latest surgery marks a milestone in the medical procedure. Underwood received the surface transplant almost 18 months after its self-contained injury, the shortest period reported from the original event. This rapid timetable, by Rodriguez, would help Underwood's physical and emotional recovery.

"Cameron has not lived with an injury for more than a decade or so as most recipients transplant other faces," said Rodriguez. "As a result, it had not had to deal with many long-term psychosocial issues that often result in problems such as severe depression, substance misuse, and other harmful behavioral behavior."

Unlike previous surface transplant cases, Underwood had to wait for only six months for a donor. His donor, William Fisher, a 23-year-old author's film producer, was a great game for Underwood. Fisher, who lives in New York City before his death, is remembered by family and friends as a loving and intelligent individual.

"Being part of this experience has been a strong source for me during a very difficult time. I do not think we would have survived the Will's death if not for Cameron," Fisher's mother Sally said. "Cameron has his whole life of front – and I love the idea that Willie helps him get a better life."

On Thursday, Underwood thanked Rodriguez's medical team and a donor for his second chance during his life.

"Will and his family made an incredible animal to give me what was lost. I will never forget that. I'm also very grateful to Dr. Rodriguez and a face transplant team, "said Underwood at a conference at the Langone NYU Health press. "My family and I had not been able to make this trip without them. I hope that my experience will inspire others with serious face injuries to hope, as I have inspired myself by others who came before me . The journey has not been easy, but it's been worth it. "
