Multi-vehicle accident after oil loss sends liquid down Hwy. 1 near Chilliwack – BC



A multi-vehicle accident which tied traffic for hours on Highway 1 near Chilliwack on Sunday was caused by a fuel leak, said RCMP.

Const. Greg Dykstra told Global News that crews were called to the west side of the highway before Yale Road around 11am for reports of a number of collisions.

He said that a fuel tanker had been separated from a tractor and oil trailer which had dropped 1,000 meters down the highway.

Eventually, a number of vehicles slipped across the road because of the oil, causing them to break down and blocking the lanes around the west.

At least one vehicle overturned, confirmed, but only minor injuries were recorded.

Highway 1 was closed to the west between Lickman Road and Vedder Canal for about two hours, causing traffic to run off for several kilometers to the east of the view.

The road reopened about 2 p.m.

The cause of the separation is under investigation.
