A quantitative approach adds a rich mood to the expressions of their children's robot – ScienceDaily


Japan's love for robots is not secret. But do they feel each other in the incredible androids of the country? Now, we may be a step closer to giving advanced facial expressions to communicate with androids.

Although robots have appeared in developments in healthcare, industrial and other locations in Japan, still holding a dynamic expression in a robotic face remains a difficult challenge. Although the properties of their system have been treated generally, androids facial expressions have not been explored in detail. This is due to factors such as the huge range and discomfort of natural human movements, material restrictions used in Android skin, and of course the robot movements of complex engineering and math driving drots.

A trio of researchers at the University of Osaka have now found a method for identifying and evaluating face movements on a robot's robot robot. Named Affetto, it was reported that the first generation model for Android was in the 2011 announcement. The researchers have now found a system to make Afetto more expressive reproduction. Their perceptions offer a path for androidos to express more emotions, and ultimately they have deeper interaction with people.

The researchers reported their findings in the magazine Borders in Robotics and AI.

"Facial analyzes are a key issue in managing face-to-face problems," explained co-authored Minoru Asada study. "The movements of their soft surface skin create instability, and this is a major hardware problem we carry. We tried a better way of measuring and managing."

The researchers investigated 116 different facial points on Affetto to measure its three-dimensional movement. The surface points were based on the so-called offshore units. Each unit includes a set of mechanisms that create a distinctive facial barrier, such as reducing or erasing part of a lip. Then, measurements of these were the subject of a mathematical model to measure their surface motion patterns.

Although the researchers faced challenges when balancing the applied police and when adjusting the synthetic skin, they were able to employ their system to modify the deformation units to control the exact face effects of Affetto's face.

"Android robot faces have still been a black box problem: they have been implemented but have been judged in unclear and general terms," ​​said first author, Hisashi Ishihara. "Our detailed findings will enable us to effectively control the movements of the surface of iroid to present more talented expressions, such as smiling and full."
