3rd Canada detained in China, says Global Affairs

Third Canada has been held in custody in China, according to Global Affairs Canada.

Canadian officials refused to give details of who the person is or why they are being kept, identifying privacy concerns.

"Canada's Global Affairs is aware of a Canadian citizen detained in China. Consular officials provide support to the family," said Maegan Graveline spokesman

A source who spoke on the state of anonymity said that Canada officials had been informed of the fact that they are being kept on Tuesday by someone who knows the person who is kept up to date – not by Chinese officials.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying, for media briefing said on Wednesday that he had not heard about the third retention.

The latest arrest, first reported by the National Post, is found between increasing tensions between Canada and China.

Canada has faced severe criticism by Chinese officials and media as Meng Wanzhou, chief executive of Huawei's major telecommunications companies, has arrested in Vancouver earlier this month. Meng was arrested at the request of the U.S. and release on bail as extradition proceedings occur.

Not long after Meng arrested, Chinese officials confirmed that two Canadian men were being held on national security concerns, officials in China said.

A Canadian team, Michael Kovrig, was a diplomat with the CA but was absent to work with a non-governmental organization at the time of arrest in China. The other man, Michael Spavor, is a businessman who organizes trips from North Korea.

Canada officials had not contacted the most recent arrest of the recent diplomatic disaster between the countries.
