The Finance Minister proposed in Boyko Borissov Simeon Djankov’s first cabinet that an expert commission should be created to help the government deal with the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus. In an interview with BTV, the economist suggested that he himself take part in it, as well as prime ministers who have gone through crisis periods, and he drew attention to Ivan Kostov and Plamen Oresharski as such.
According to him, these are people who can help with good advice, as they have been involved in state processes and know the state structure well. According to him, there are similar specialized commissions in other countries. Kostov and Oresharski are both former prime ministers and former finance ministers.
Djankov also said he expects taxes to rise in about two years, as many social benefits are increased during the crisis. He suggested that VAT will most likely be raised, as Bulgaria’s budget is designed in such a way that most of the money in it can come from VAT.
The former finance minister expressed his hope that the banks are currently strong enough to avoid a crisis in the sector.
