The crew aboard the CSIRO research ship Researcher, captured the moment a meteor flashed brightly as it rejoined the Earth’s atmosphere before breaking down over the southern Tasmanian coast.

The meteor flashed bright green to the bridge crew who saw the meteor cross the sky and break up over the Tasman Sea at 9.21pm AEDT on Wednesday.

Fortunately for those of us who were unable to witness the phenomenon in person, the meteor happened to cross the sky right in front of the ship’s live stream camera, which beams live vision of the ship 24/7.

“We were amazed by what we saw from the live stream photos, the size and brightness of the meteor was amazing,” CSIRO Cruise Manager aboard RV Researcher John Hooper said.

“The meteor crosses the sky right in front of the ship and then breaks up – it was amazing to watch the photos and we were very fortunate to have captured it all live on the ship.”
