Shower meteor, comet to the Canberra Opening race

Canberrans is for Friday's astronomical treatment, with a boring green comet and the best meteor shower in the southern hemisphere set to light the night sky.

People would just need their eyes to see up to 30 meteors falling an hour over the northern air of the territory from around 11.30pm as part of Geminid's meteor showers, says Australian National University Serpentist Brad Tucker.

The Meteorology Bureau has predicted a maximum of 25 degrees for Friday, with a storm storm likely in the morning and afternoon.

Geminid's meteoric shower, pictured, will illuminate Canberra's night, and the best day to see is Friday, says the ANU's Dr Brad Tucker.

But if the clouds are clear, a small telescope or binocolars would be necessary to see Comet 46 / P Wirtanen, known as a Christmas gomet, says Dr Tucker.
