Los Angeles – Grammy nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot dead in the city of Los Angeles in the US city, sparking a grief of fellow celebrities as the city's mayor blamed "senseless guns violence."

According to local media reports, a man was shot in front of his own clothes shop on Sunday afternoons close by, a man who fled in a getaway car.

"Our hearts are close to the loved ones of Nipsey Hussle and everyone who is touched by this terrible tragedy," LA Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted them.

A police spokesman told AFP that the suspicion of a shooter remained general.

"L.A. is deeply hurt every time a young life is lost to senseless gun violence," Garcetti said.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the shooting was "likely to have been planned and associated with gangs."

The Grammy-nominated rapper had found some commercial success but was highly regarded by his peers, and his death shocked tributes from hip hop monarchy.

Hussle, part of the underground rap zone, found it hard to find fame but began selling his own mixed tapes, and the king bought Jay-Z rap once 100 for $ 100 each.

Hussle – his youth had interweaved with the Los Angeles gang culture – criticized: "Having strong enemies is a blessing."

Hussle's "Victory Lap" scored a Grammy nomination for the Best Rap album at this year's ceremony.
