All charges against US actor Jussie Smollett fell after a false hate attack

Chicago – US prosecutors dropped all charges Tuesday against TV actor Jussie Smollett, accused of forging racist and homophobic hate crime, said his attorneys.

"Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean," Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes said in a joint statement.

The 36-year-old actor had denied 16 felony counts of a mastered allegation mock attack on downtown Chicago streets to get publicity and earn more wages.

"He was a victim who was billed and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to an adjudication," the attorneys said.

Smollett was accused of sending a threatening letter to himself and hiring two acquaintances to staging a street attack, with homophobic and racist slugs, while calling a slogan "Make America Great Again" Donald Trump.

The case provoked widespread sympathy with the actor and the anger over the attack.

But later the actor was written out of the last two episodes in Fox Empire's "Empire," in the midst of the accusations against him.

Program producers said they had no comments on the latest developments.
