A massive asteroid is expected to fly close to the Earth in 2029: Nasa, US News and Best Stories

WASHINGTON (XINHUA) – Asteroid of the 99942 name Apophis will fly towards the Earth in 10 years, said US space agency, Nasa recently.

The giant asteroid, named after the god of chaos and the destruction of Egypt, is expected to approach the Earth close to Earth on April 13, 2029, according to the latest data from Nasa.

But there is no need to worry as it will be about 31,000km away from the surface of the Earth.

Nasa said that it is relatively rare for such a large object to pass so close to the Earth and it will be a great opportunity for asteroid scientists worldwide to conduct a close study of size, shape, composition and even its black in Apophis.

"The close approach to Apophis in 2029 will be an amazing opportunity for science," said Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a Nasa statement.

"We will observe the asteroid with optical telescopes and radar. With radar comments, we may see surface details that are only a few meters in size," Brozovic said.

Apophis was discovered in 2004 by US astronomers. Since its discovery, optical telescopes and radar have traced Apophis as it continues on its orbit around the Sun, so scientists know well its future direction.

Current calculations show that Apophis still has a small chance of affecting the Earth, says Nasa.
